Incoherent Quasielastic Neutron Scattering study of hydrogen diffusion in thorium–zirconium hydrides

چکیده
Monophase thorium–zirconium hydrides (ThZr2Hx) have been fabricated starting from a metallic alloy and the hydrogen stoichiometry determined by X-ray diffraction. Incoherent Quasielastic Neutron Scattering (IQNS) on the hydrides was conducted over the temperature range 650–750 K at the Backscattering Silicon Spectrometer (BASIS) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at ORNL. The isotropic Chudley–Elliott model was utilized to analyze the quasielastic linewidth broadening data as function of momentum transfer. The diffusion coefficient and average jump distance of hydrogen atoms in ThZr2H5.6 and ThZr2H6.2 were extracted from the measurements. 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

SEPARATION OF THE COHERENT AND INCOHERENT SCATTERING OF C2Cl6 BY POLARIZATION ANALYSIS
In neutron scattering by C2CI6 the incoherent contribution to the quasielastic linewidth gives information on the reorientational motion of the molecules by scattering on individual atoms. The coherent scattering contains in contrast also interference effects. With polarisation analysis it is possible to distinguish between coherent and spin incoherent scattering. If it is possible to modulate ...
متن کاملIncoherent quasielastic neutron scattering study of molecular dynamics of 4-n-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl.
We report incoherent quasielastic neutron scattering experiments on the thermotropic liquid crystal 4-n-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl. The combination of time-of-flight and backscattering data allows analysis of the intermediate scattering function over about three decades of relaxation times. Translational diffusion and uniaxial molecular rotations are clearly identified as the major relaxation proce...
متن کاملDynamics of surface water in ZrO2 studied by quasielastic neutron scattering.
A quasielastic neutron scattering experiment has revealed the dynamics of surface water in a high surface area zirconium oxide in the temperature range of 300-360 K. The characteristic times of the rotational (picoseconds) and translational (tens of picoseconds) components of diffusion motion are well separated. The rotational correlation time shows an Arrhenius-type behavior with an activation...
متن کاملAdsorption and melting of hydrogen in potassium-intercalated graphite
Volumetric adsorption and quasielastic neutron scattering are used to study the diffusion and thermodynamics of sorbed H2 in the graphite intercalation compound KC24. A sorption enthalpy of 8.5 kJ/mol at zero coverage is determined from H2 adsorption isotherms. From measurements of total elastic-neutron-scattering intensity as a function of temperature, a melting transition of the H2 adsorbate ...
متن کاملBr diffusion in molten NaBr explored by coherent quasielastic neutron scattering.
Molten sodium bromide has been investigated by quasielastic neutron scattering focusing on the wave vector range around the first structure factor peak. The linewidth of the scattering function shows a narrowing around the wave number of the structure factor peak, known as deGennes narrowing. In a monatomic system, this narrowing or in the time domain slowing down, has been related to a self-di...
